Dark web child abuse: Hundreds arrested across 38 countries

These are very young children, supposedly in the safety of their own bedrooms, very likely unaware that the activities they are being coerced into doing are being recorded and saved and ultimately shared multiple times on the internet. Below is the breakdown of the sexual activity seen in the whole sample alongside the activity of those that showed multiple children. Most of the time these children are initially clothed and much of what we see is a quick display of genitals. It could also be that most 3–6-year-olds are not left alone long enough for the child porn discussion and the coercion to get further along, towards full nudity and more severe sexual activity.

“We did a thorough survey of the Telegram group links that were reported in Brazil through —SaferNet Brasil’s reporting channel—from January 1 to June 30 this year. Of these 874 links, 141 were still active during the months in which the verification took place (July through September). Of these active links, we found 41 groups in which it was proven there was not only distribution of child sexual abuse images, but also buying and selling.

The Justice Department says existing federal laws clearly apply to such content, and recently brought what’s believed to be the first federal case involving purely AI-generated imagery — meaning the children depicted are not real but virtual. In another case, federal authorities in August arrested a U.S. soldier stationed in Alaska accused of running innocent pictures of real children he knew through an AI chatbot to make the images sexually explicit. Law enforcement agencies across the U.S. are cracking down on a troubling spread of child sexual abuse imagery created through artificial intelligence technology — from manipulated photos of real children to graphic depictions of computer-generated kids. Justice Department officials say they’re aggressively going after offenders who exploit AI tools, while states are racing to ensure people generating “deepfakes” and other harmful imagery of kids can be prosecuted under their laws. With the recent significant advances in AI, it can be difficult if not impossible for law enforcement officials to distinguish between images of real and fake children. Lawmakers, meanwhile, are passing a flurry of legislation to ensure local prosecutors can bring charges under state laws for AI-generated “deepfakes” and other sexually explicit images of kids.

A lot of the AI imagery they see of children being hurt and abused is disturbingly realistic. Most of the images and videos showed children in a home setting and most often in a child’s bedroom. In the backgrounds, analysts saw soft toys, games, books and bedding featuring cartoon characters. In some images the location could not be determined as the image was very close up.

Each time a media outlet uses one of these phrases it reinforces a perception that child sexual abuse can be consensual. It also, in turn, helps to diminish the crime and perpetuate the abuse by mutualising the experience of both the perpetrator and the victim involved. Perhaps the most important part of the Ashcroft decision for emerging issues around AI-generated child sexual abuse material was part of the statute that the Supreme Court did not strike down. That provision of the law prohibited “more common and lower tech means of creating virtual (child sexual abuse material), known as computer morphing,” which involves taking pictures of real minors and morphing them into sexually explicit depictions. Learning that someone you know has been viewing child sexual abuse material (child pornography) must have been very shocking, and it’s normal to feel angry, disgusted, scared, or confused – or all of these things at once.
